ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is a global leader in the development of voluntary consensus standards that are used by companies, individuals, and various global institutions. The American Society for Testing and Materials was founded in 1898 by Charles B. Dudley, a chemist with the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Over 12,000 ASTM standards are used globally to help improve overall quality, enhance public health and safety, strengthen access to markets and trade, and build consumer confidence. Through the contributions of more than 30,000 volunteers, consisting of the world’s top technical experts and business professionals representing over 140 countries, the ASTM is a leader in international standards development. Collaborating in an open and transparent process, members create test methods, specifications, classifications, guides, and best practices that support industries and governments.
ASTM International has no role in enforcing the requirements or compliance with its standards. These standards may become mandatory when referenced by an external contract, corporation, or government body.
