Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium that belongs to the ferritic family of steels. Known for its good corrosion resistance and formability, grade 430 also demonstrates practical mechanical properties. Due to its resistance to nitric acid, this metal can be found in certain chemical applications where corrosion resistance is more important than strength.
Type 430 has poor weldability compared to most stainless steels because of higher carbon content and lack of stabilizing elements that requires post weld heat treatment to restore the corrosion resistance and ductility. Grades such as stabilized 439 and 441 are considered superior alternatives for welded ferritic stainless steel applications.
