AS9100 is a widely adopted and standardized Quality Management System for the Aerospace Industry. This International Standard specifies requirements for a Quality Management System where an organization: a) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and b) aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system, and (c) the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

Over the last year, T.I. evaluated its Quality Management System practices, policies, and procedures and its ability to meet these additional requirements which would win them accreditation across the company’s 16 world wide locations. At Titanium Industries, we work with many manufacturers, engineers and designers that use titanium in a wide variety of products and projects. Titanium is extremely tough yet lightweight, boasting the highest strength to weight ratio of any structural metal. It takes far less titanium to produce a structure that matches the same strength of other metals. If individual plates of the same weight were made from titanium, copper and stainless steel, the titanium plate would be double the size of the copper, and 75% larger than the stainless steel. Conversely you could buy half as much titanium to do the same job as copper, and slightly more than half as much to do the same job as stainless steel.

1.   1. Titanium in the Aerospace market

The SR-71 "Blackbird" war plane was the first aircraft to use titanium extensively in its structure and skin. The aerodynamic friction that resulted from the intense speeds of which the aircraft was capable created so much aerodynamic friction that if any other metal was used, it would simply melt out of the sky. In fact, it was so fast, that if anyone fired a surface to air missile at it – the standard evasive procedure was to simply accelerate and outrun it! Holding the record of the fastest aircraft in the world for over 30 years, the Blackbird reached speeds of 3500km an hour, or three times the speed of sound. Today, about two thirds of all titanium metal produced is used in aircraft engines and frames. As an example, the A380 Aerobus uses approximately 70 tons of titanium for the aircraft structure and fittings.

1.       2.  Titanium in medical devices.

Titanium is one of the most biocompatible metals – the human body can handle it in large doses with no impact. In fact, it is estimated that we ingest around 0.8mg of titanium a day – most passes through us without being absorbed. Also, its density is very similar to human bone, which will readily adhere to it. These qualities make Titanium perfect for use in surgical implants, such as hip balls, sockets (joint replacements), heart stents and dental implants. Lasting in excess of 20 years with no effects, Titanium is a clear choice in the medical field. Its high strength to weight ratio also makes it the perfect choice for surgical instruments and other medical devices. Wheelchairs made from titanium provide the lightest weight, yet are very strong and children’s wheelchairs can be made to grow as the child becomes older.

3. Titanium in everyday products

Surprisingly, of all the mined and synthetic titanium minerals, approximately only 5% is used to produce titanium metal. The remaining 95% is used to manufacture pure titanium dioxides – a pigment that enhances brightness and opacity in paints and inks, paper, and plastics, and even in food products and cosmetics. It’s also the metal used in the body of Apple’s PowerBook line – helping achieve a lightweight frame.

4.     Titanium Art/Architecture

Titanium spontaneously forms a hard protective oxide film upon contact with any oxygen. It’s this film that gives the metal its trademark shine and shimmer, with variations in the film’s thickness affecting the color that the metal projects. It also has remarkable elasticity, making it the metal of choice for artistic and architectural structures.  For instance, the 40 m (131 foot) memorial to Yuri Gagarin (the first man to travel in space) in Moscow, is made of titanium for the metal's attractive color and association with rocketry. The Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao is sheathed in titanium panels. It can also be used to help structural repair of historic buildings. Titanium was used as a part of the 2008 structural repair and stabilization for the Leaning tower of Pisa in Italy.

The artist who chose Titanium for the Olympic Torch Cauldron said he chose the metal for two reasons – its modern image of superior technology and its beautiful colors when heat treated.

Ti donated the titanium panels that were used in a 9-11 Memorial Monument to commemorate all those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers tragedy.

1.       5. Titanium in Sporting Products

The high strength to weight ratio of Titanium makes it ideal for use in a wide range of sporting equipment. Titanium is a core material in the components of the world's lightest bicycle, which weighs only 6 lbs.! Considering an average adult bike weighs 30 lbs. and racing bikes weigh around 15 lbs., this bike is extremely lightweight thanks to its titanium structure. 

The number 1 consumer of titanium for sporting goods is in manufacture of golf club heads. Most manufacturers such as Taylor Made, Cobra, Ping and Integra have a titanium line.

Titanium is also naturally resistant to corrosion and erosion – making it a great choice for safety equipment. When the 6000 bolts that secured the daring climbing track in Ton Sai first started to erode, they were replaced with stainless steel. However the stainless steel replacements only lasted 9 months, after which they had a corrosion problem that would break the bolt on a simple body weight charge. Metallurgists discovered that the only metal the climbers could trust with their lives was titanium. An average of 2000 climbers use this track per week, and a group of keen climbers have started a charity to replace all the bolts with titanium along the entire length of the route.

 Looking to penetrate the rapidly expanding Chinese market for aerospace, medical products and industrial business opportunities, Titanium Industries Inc., Rockaway, NJ, USA, has opened a sales office in Shanghai.                The Shanghai office opened its doors on January 2. John Tien, Managing Director of Ti Industries Asia Inc.’s Taiwan branch, said the presence of Zhu at the Shanghai office reflects the company’s “determination and enthusiasm to service its Chinese customers,” which involves both local enterprise and foreign investment. Establishing the Shanghai office also demonstrates that Ti Industries is attuned to the evolving requirements of offshore companies seeking to do business in China. According to Tien, the Chinese market is now focused on “high domestic demand” rather than simply carrying the label of being “cheap-labor intensive.”

             Jeff Wise, Ti Industries’ Vice President of sales and marketing, said the company has distribution centers in Taipei and Bangalore, India.  The Shanghai office reports to Taipei, which in turn reports directly to Wise. He indicated that, in addition to metal sales and marketing in Shanghai, the company’s long-range plan is to ramp up its distribution and value-added operations.

              Ti Industries will compete aggressively in China and the larger Asian market by bringing “an understanding of value-added services and metal distribution to users of titanium and high-performance metals,” Wise declared, noting that metal distribution channels are still in the early stages of the growth curve. “Until a few years ago, distribution of metals in China wasn’t even largely considered,” he continued. “China has 1.3 billion people and is now the world’s second-leading economy behind the United States.”

             Outlining the company’s regional business strategy for Asia, Wise said the Shanghai office represents Ti Industries’ desire to serve its existing global customer base as well as explore new business prospects. “There are core global customers whom we service and many of them are either expanding their own operations into China or sourcing more from that part of the world,” he explained. “We need to be there to support them. There is also a significant, growing demand for infrastructure and industrial applications within China, such as power plants, refineries and aerospace. We want to be there to service that demand.

            “I have seen the cultural and economic evolution of China over the past 20 years,” Wise continued. “The Chinese people are educated, very warm and friendly and embrace new technology and ideas.” Regarding  China’s business culture, Wise said Chinese industrial engineers and entrepreneurs value “attention to detail.”

Martin is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte with a BA in Economics.  He comes to HPM from ATI Allvac where he was most recently involved in product management for all steel, nickel shapes and rectangles and nickel shafts.  Martin will be located in Harrisburg, NC and will report to Jeff Wise, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The entire implementation in Taiwan took less than six weeks.

The first phase of implementation had included all seven locations in the U.S., and an additional location in Montreal, Canada. All implementations included sales, purchasing, receiving, inventory management, certification management, multi-step production, delivery and logistics planning, invoicing, and financials.

Titanium Industries Announces Promotions

On March 8, Brett Paddock, President and CEO of Titanium Industries, Inc. announced the promotion of Craig Simpson to Managing Director, Europe.  Paddock, who had taken on the responsibilities of CEO for Titanium Industries earlier this year, stated, “Craig has exhibited the energy, talent, and leadership skills to address the challenges of continuing to establish our European business as the market leader and maximize the synergies between Ti Industries, UK and GMT” (GMT is Titanium Industries’ wholly owned divisions located in Scandinavia and UK).  “As Managing Director, Craig will be responsible for all aspects of European operations and will oversee all European facilities.  This newly created position will require constant interaction with all departments and divisions to continue to take advantage of Titanium Industries’ global position and best align our company with our international partners.”

Sales
Titanium Industries selected STRATIX to improve the productivity of their sales staff through the use of specialized tools to quote and manage orders more rapidly and effectively. Titanium Industries enter Quotes on STRATIX, which automatically retrieves the metal selling price based on the Metal Price Book, and convert these Quotes into Sales Orders. The benefit of the price book is that the salesperson is provided with pricing guidelines, while the STRATIX Quotation function provides the estimated profitability of the quote. The Quote Entry function also provides stock availability, incoming material availability, sales history, and quantity bracket information, all in one screen, to help the salesperson quickly determine the final price. To take advantage of their large inventory at all locations, sales staff can see the stock availability in any TI warehouse location. This allows the salesperson to source the order from another company location as required. Bob Valerie, Project manager, adds, “A salesperson can easily enter a Sales Order with 20 items, and source the material from 4 different company warehouses. In addition, if that load is consolidated at a single company location before the material is shipped to the customer, STRATIX creates the transfer requirements

automatically. This saves a lot of time for the salesperson and makes it easier for us to service our customers.” For repeat business, TI use the STRATIX Customer Part Specification function, which allows a salesperson to enter the Quote or Sales Order using the customer’s part number. TI can pre-define comprehensive item information (such as product, processing, pricing, specs, certification requirements, etc.) and associate it to a Customer Part Number. When sales enter a quote/order item using a Customer’s Part Number, all the information automatically defaults. This allows for consistency, saves times, and reduces the chance of keying errors.

TI also use the STRATIX plate cutting functions to meet their increasing water-jet plate cutting business. These functions make it easier and faster to enter quotes and orders as the salesperson can choose from a set of shapes, and STRATIX will calculate the estimated time of processing, cost, and charge for processing, and adjust the final price accordingly. Some of the shapes include rings, ring segments, circles, triangles, trapezes and rectangles. The function eliminates manual calculations and increases the accuracy of the price. Brett Paddock, President and Chief Executive Officer at Titanium Industries, added, “The STRATIX Order Status Desktop has been a tremendous asset to our business. It shows a clear and comprehensive status of the customer order in a single view. We can see where exactly the material is at each stage of processing, including outside processing, or transport planning and shipping. This is especially helpful since we record all production on the shop floor. Sales staff no longer need to hunt down orders and can respond to customer inquiries rapidly and with confidence.”

TI also process orders where titanium ingot is processed through multiple steps internally or at an outside processor and can include forging, heat treatment and saw cutting to produce a finished bar product. Bob adds, “For these types of orders, where the processing can take 16 weeks, the Order Status Desktop has been invaluable. At any point during fulfillment, our salesperson knows exactly where we stand with that order.”

TI also implemented INVEX/CRM, Invera’s Internet-based, fully integrated STRATIX Customer Relationship Management product. This enables sales managers and sales people to manage customer accounts on-line and offers task and activity management, marketing and sales analysis information which is tied to the live data base.

Certification
Quality and Certification are an integral part of Titanium Industries operations. Meeting customer and industry certification and specifications requirements was a critical objective of implementing STRATIX. To this end, Titanium Industries implemented the STRATIX Metal Standards and Specifications features that enable material to be bought, inventoried, and sold to multiple ‘Metal Standards’ specifications. These Metal Standards represent industry-specific specifications such as ASTM, SAE, MIL, AISI, etc. As material is applied to orders, STRATIX verifies that the material applied meets the single or multiple metal standards requested by
the customer. This feature has added another layer of controls to guarantee Titanium Industries customers are being supplied with exactly what they ordered. To assist Sales in locating stock that meets a customer’s requirements, Sales can search stock that meets a certain Metal Standard specification. In addition, to eliminate manual comparisons of the actual results to the published standard specifications, the actual chemical and mechanical results recorded in STRATIX are automatically validated against each Metal Standard to which a product is certified. This provides an additional quality check.

To meet a customer’s need for original mill test certifications, Titanium Industries implemented STRATIXimage, a mill test certificate scanning and retrieval product that automatically emails or prints a copy of the original mill certificate or other third-party testing certificates at time of shipment. A salesperson can also view the certificate from the stock inquiry to ensure that the material meets the customer’s requirements.

Shop Floor Operations
To further increase productivity, quality and order status information, Titanium Industries implemented the STRATIX shop floor production functions to record production in a real-time manner directly from work stations. Operations include picking, processing steps (such as sawing or water-jet cutting), and inspection steps. The warehouse personnel also record the set-up time, run, and tear-down time for each job. By comparing these results to the estimates computed by STRATIX, TI is able to determine their machine and processing efficiency. Bob Valerie indicated that by recording production and inspection directly on the shop
floor, they have ensured a higher level of quality, as STRATIX performs many checks at each stage to ensure the proper material is applied.

To complement the shop floor operations, TI are also printing the STRATIX bar coded tags at receiving and production. When combined with the STRATIX WiFi PDA function, the bar codes ensure that material is correctly identified.

To improve on-time delivery and load planning, TI implemented the STRATIX on-line Shipping Planning function. This function provides a comprehensive, multi-layer inquiry that summarizes orders by customer, delivery route, or shipping zone for better load consolidation. The shipping department can highlight orders and create a load with a single click. Bob Valerie adds, “This function has really streamlined our shipping process. For each item that must be shipped, we can see if the item is ready for shipment. It has also allowed us to better manage the transfers between our company locations.” Bob Valerie also adds, “Another area we really benefited from was how the STRATIX Metal enterprise software handles outside processing. The outside processing steps are fully integrated with the routing of the Sales Order; the creation of the outside processing Purchase Orders and transfer requirements is all automated, and the progression of these types of orders is also shown in the Order Status Desktop for sales.”

Implementation

Titanium Industries was trained by the Invera consulting group who provided the TI Core Team with hands-on
experience. Simon Gereige, Senior Consultant at Invera, added, “Titanium saved a lot of time by using the STRATIX metal-specific and process specific end user documentation. TI was able to take the standard documentation we provide, add some additional instructions specific to their company policies, and then provide these to the users for the end user training.”

TITANIUM INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCES ORGANIZATIONAL APPOINTMENTS

Titanium Industries, Inc. recently announced two significant appointments in its organizational structure.  Bruce Krol was name Director of Quality and Greg Tamillo was named Western Regional Sales Manager, USA.  Both people bring a new perspective to their position and will provide new and valuable insight to both the quality and sales organizations.

Mr. Krol, Director of Quality has served in positions including Quality Assurance Director, Quality Systems Engineer and Senior Manufacturing Engineer that served the FAA manufacturing, repair and refurbishment, automotive and electronics industries.  He brings with him significant experience in quality systems and procedures, project management, training and development, quality engineering, supplier development and cost reduction development and implementation.  He holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from University of Massachusetts, an MS in Operations Management from Lesley University and continued his education with CS Business Management from Harvard Business School.  Mr. Krol reports to Brett Paddock, President and CEO of Titanium Industries, Inc., working from the corporate office in Rockaway, NJ.

Mr. Tamillo, Western Regional Sales Manager has served in a variety of positions within the metals distribution network including National Sales Manager, Manager International Sales, Western Regional Director, Quality Control Manager and most recently VP New Business Development.  He brings with him a strong track record of customer service, management and leadership skills, quality and procedural improvement and both program and product line management.  He attended California State University, Fullerton.  Mr. Tamillo reports to Dan Blood, Western Regional Manager, working from Titanium Industries Santa Fe Springs, CA facility.
